Teaching
Students are required to take seven compulsory modules and two optional modules, as well as conducting a dissertation. Teaching is provided by a combination of lectures in the compulsory and optional subjects, supplemented by classes in the compulsory modules. A supervisor is appointed for every student to provide guidance in developing the skills necessary to carry out the project.
Students are strongly encouraged to attend the online preparatory course in Mathematics and Statistics in September.
Part-time study is delivered at 0.5 FTE (full-time equivalent).
One to one supervision | 2 hours of individual supervision for the dissertation component. The University of Cambridge publishes an annual Code of Practice which sets out the University’s expectations regarding supervision. |
---|---|
Seminars & classes | 54 hours of classes and 20 hours of seminars/group presentations per year. |
Lectures | 144 hours per year. The online preparatory course consists of an additional 51 hours of lecture time.

Feedback
Classes in problem sets take place for compulsory modules.
Each student receives individual supervision for the dissertation component.
There is a test on the material covered in the preparatory course which is marked on a pass/fail basis. The test is formative and does not contribute to the overall mark for the MPhil, but failing this preparatory course will indicate that a student will need to improve their mathematical and statistical skills to cope with the main part of the course.
Assessment
Thesis / Dissertation
Students submit a dissertation of up to 10,000 words (20% of the overall course mark).
Essays
Eight modules will be assessed by a total of six projects of 2,000-3,000 words (each worth 12.5% of the overall course mark). The seminar series will be assessed by a 1,000 word case study (5% of the overall course mark).
